Ah, man, we have this student here who has a genuine mental problem. But this student is also a complete asshole with or without the mental problem.

I feel for this student, really. They missed all of the third quarter - and it turned out that the person calling in to excuse the absences wasn't the mom. The mom doesn't know who did it (I mean, but obviously, even if it wasn't the student, the student got somebody to call in an excuse them) but the mom isn't holding the student accountable either. Neither is the school.

So, yeah, they have more than enough absences - both excused and unexcused - to be expelled, but because of the mental health issue, the school has bent over backwards to let them continue. So the student returned to school for the first time in months last week.

The other students are terrified of this one. They've expressed concern that this student is going "go Columbine" on them. And they're not ever aware of the mental health issue - they're just talking about behavior and talk. Still no removal. This one student's chance to stay at school is trumping all of the other students' comfort and ability to work with focus. I have teachers threatening to quit and sue the school over this. But still the student stays.

The mind boggling thing is that there's now way for this student to get a passing grade in most classes. This is acknowledged by the mom. Mom also acknowledges that a medical withdrawal would look better on her transcript than a bunch of "F's." The student wants to stay, so the student stays.

Don't get it.
